Should You Buy the Canon EOS 60D Instead of the Canon EOS 550D?

Canon has just released their newest digital EOS camera in the form of the Canon EOS 60D. This is intended as a replacement for the older 50D and offers many improvements on its older sibling making it a real upgrade for those who alreay own an EOS 50D. However the specification of the new 60D is very similar to Canon's other big release this year, the EOS 550D digital camera. So if you're considering purchasing a Canon EOS digital camera for the first time or already own an older Canon digital camera which should you buy given the real difference in price between the two?

The Canon 60D vs the Canon 550D

On the surface there doesn't seem to be much to choose between the two cameras. They are both aimed at a similar market and both have very similar specifications however the newer 60D has a significantly higher price than the very slightly older 550D.

Well let's look at the headline features that both cameras share.

Shared Features of Both Cameras

  • 18 megapixels image resolution
  • 9 Autofocus points
  • Three quarter frame shooting
  • ISO range 100-12,800
  • 63 Metering modes
  • HD Video recording at 1080p (at 30fps)

So it seems that the two cameras have a lot in common.

Given this does anything justify digging much deeper into your wallet for the newer EOS 60D or has Canon made a mistake in releasing a more expensive camera aimed at a similar market?

Well, if we look at the features that the 60D has that the Canon 550D doesn't then maybe things become a little clearer.

The Canon EOS 60D is a heavier camera and the this particular line has always been aimed at the prosumer rather than the home enthuasist. It also uses a pentaprism viewfinder like the more expensive semi-pro 7D. You'll also be able to shoot faster wcanonith this camera as its frame rate is much faster than the 550D.

So it's clear then, for approximately half as much money again you'll get a much heavier camera that can shoot faster than the less expensive Canon EOS 550D. For my money I think I'd stretch a bit further and go for the Canon EOS 7D with full frame images and many of the same features or just stick with your existing 550D and wait for the 600D which will probably be out next year and feature many more improvements on the existing range.
